Biggest Sycamore Tree in Pennsylvania
Some say this is not the second-largest tree in Pennsylvania, but I think so. It is located in the
Brandywine Battlefield Park off of RT 1. I was tree hunting and found it.
Sycamore Tree Platanus occidentalis
Platanus occidentalis, also known as American sycamore, American planetree, western plane, occidental plane, buttonwood, and water beech, is a species of Platanus native to the eastern and central United States, the mountains of northeastern Mexico, extreme southern Ontario, and possibly extreme southern Quebec. Just noticed this article about the huge sycamore. You might want to view the 250+ year old sycamore at 8183 Kings Hwy ,Zionsville ,PA. 18092. It is extremely straight and quite stately. Go for another drive and check it out.
Hello Judy; Thank you for the great information and very nice comments.
There is a new champ in town! A Penn charter tree that was thought to be lost, was found recently and reported to the champion tree program! The largest single stem tree of any kind in PA, the largest sycamore in the country and the world! http://www.pabigtrees.com. the multiple stemmed sycamore in Mercersburg is not eligible as it has four stems at ground level.
Hello Scott thanks for the update and info. Hope You are well. Lou
So, is this post/thread about the largest or oldest Sycamore Tree in Pennsylvania? Because the caption below the picture states “The Oldest Sycamore Tree in Pennsylvania”, yet the post is talking about the “Biggest Sycamore Tree in Pennsylvania” and the comments in the thread are talking about the biggest in Pennsylvania. Some clarification would be great!
So, this is a bit confusing. The name of this thread is “The Biggest Sycamore Tree in Pennsylvania”, but the caption to the picture says “The Oldest Sycamore Tree in Pennsylvania”. Which is it? The comments are talking about the biggest sycamore, yet, like I had mentioned, the caption says “The Oldest”. Some clarification would be helpful.
I will check it out, I think both, but if not I will change the post. Thanks visit and comments
Stare tuned, I live in NJ and will visit the tree soon. See previous posts for the discussion.
sorry to break it to u. that is not the largest sycamore in pa. check pa big trees listing. the champ is located in mercersburg pa.
Hi Richard;
In checking it out, I see the listing in http://www.pabigtrees.com/view_tree.aspx The address is bogus, do a Google maps and will see a field I will try and visit that tree and measure both, btw 529 is a way to big a number. I just got my Nikon Forestry tool and looking forward to using it. I sent an email to Scott Wade and will verify the tree.
Thanks for the visit and info.
sorry pal, the biggest in pa is in center valley pa. near allentown. 30 ft. plus a bit up from the base of tree.
