Here’s my GPS solution and story, it took many months of trail and error testing to come up with this solution, needless to say there are no economical ones. It all started with my new Nikon D200 which has GPS capabilities, when connected to a GPS it embeds the longitude, latitude and altitude into the exif header of the nef and jpg files. I all ready had a Garmin Etrex mapping GPS which is NMEA, but has the older and slower chip set which is not desirable, but I could live with it. The first problem was I needed the Nikon MC-35 cable, it’s a special cable that has a serial converter chip in it, as with other Nikon accessories there’s none to be had, people that have them want premium prices, 40 percent over list. The use of the cable has pros and cons. The pros are it has an addition 10 pin socket so you can use the remote shutter release and the GPS at the same time. The con is that it adds a lot of use list bulk with long cables. I decided to look for another GPS receiver that had the new SiRF Star III chipset and a direct output to the Nikon camera. I located a receiver called Ayay SIR that was open source and could be modified to output direct to the camera. It also used an external battery (several sizes available) so not add to the already taxed Nikon En3a battery. Now all I needed was a cable. Problem number two. Nikon keeps the 10 pin connector’s source a secret, but I found a clone with a 10 pin header on it located on Ebay from NovaFlex. Which I feel was over priced. The cable had the wrong info on the wiring diagram, all the colors were wrong; this required me to buzz all the wiring. Now all I had to do was add the mini usb which only uses two wires. (Signals Recv and a Gnd return) Problem number three. The Novaflex had the number of the Nikon connector wrong. I found the right numbering on the Nikonians web site.
I have to say I’m impressed with the speed and lock and the number of birds I get with the Ayay SIR GPS receiver. I will report battery life when I get more data
I have tryed 3 GPS’s, Garmin, Magellan and Ayay SIR and many cables from PC-mobile till I came up with this one. Which i think is best for my application.
The location of the GPS and its battery is still under development. Right now it is on the camera strap, in a Lowepro modular pouch model xxx. Which is bulky and I will try the hot shoe or the L Bracket when I get one, my MB-200 grip is still back ordered.
