Famous Pier at Folly Beach
07-09-2022- Looks like they are building a new pier, so these photographs are from the past.
Here’s a link to what the new one looks like. The gift shop and observation deck of the Folly Beach Pier are open to the public while replacement construction continues for the remainder of the pier structure. The new Folly Beach Pier is expected to open in the Spring of 2023. As the former, which opened in 1995, reached the end of its useful life, Charleston County Parks is moving forward with the creation of the next Folly Beach Fishing Pier that will serve our community for generations to come. Follow along with the entire transition here.

I love Folly Beach, has a magical feeling to the place. I spent endless hours walking on its beautiful sands. This island has an old wooden pier, this pier held a strong composition for me, blending man-made architecture with nature and reminds me of old New Jersey shore piers that I hung out at as a kid.
This image was brought to life after looking at the awesome work of Peter Lik. I have watched all his TV shows, and he has been a real motivating force in my photography. Check out Peters photograph of a pier in La Jolla, California, which was the inspiration for this post.

I love piers, wood piers even more so. It’s kind of sad that the wood pier which is beautiful has come to the end of its usefulness, it’s so pretty. So happy to know that you have immortalized the pier with these beautiful images.
Hi Rebeca, thank you for your insightful comments about wooden piers. A connection that I never thought about. Food for thought.
I hope that the rest of Charleston and Folly island has remained the same. I heard they kicked out the cruise ships, it is nice when the residents get to say what is progress and change it if they don’t want it. Charleston and its people have a special place in my heart, no wonder it’s rated the top city in the United States.
Living at/near the beach for the last 25 or so years I naturally gravitate to the local piers for photography subjects. I’ve never visited the Folly Beach pier and now, learning that it’s being replaced, kind of regret that. Thanks for the photos and a bit of history about this pier.
Bob, Thanks and lucky You. The beach keeps me alive, if only I lived closer.
I love the under the pier shot with the warm sunlight. Very reminiscent of summer! Did you get this dimensions wrong though? The length seems off?
Hi Steve; Thanks for the visit and comments. I’m not sure what you mean by the length is off? Are you referring to the Under the pier at Folly Beach, SC photo? Image or framing on second photo? I could crop the foreground on that image.
