The GROW! Show, the 2009 Community Juried Show at Off the Wall, continues a rich tradition. This fourth annual event follows previous renewals that have undoubtedly turned heads — and even included exclamation marks — following, as it does, SIXSIXSIX, Go Figure! And Enter Digital.
But GROW! Is definitely marching to a different drummer because it asks more questions than it dares to answer.
While “green art” and “eco-art” are probably the “in” modifiers to describe the show’s theme, GROW!, from its submission phase, tested the boundaries of how artists grapple with and re-purpose concepts, recycle images and find deeper meaning on trash night.
And it has challenged — and goes on challenging — these artists to GROW! in their own roles, find untapped capabilities and fonts of ideas, and make their own art careers and creative pastimes more sustainable.
Yes, make the art SUSTAINABLE in more ways than one. Perhaps in more ways than 100.
The artists — who will be on hand in person and through their work at the JUNE 18 OPENING RECEPTION, which runs from 7 to 10, and throughout GROW!, which runs through AUGUST 7 — are listed below.
GROW! It will also be the jumping-off point for the inaugural PLASTIC WALL SALON on JULY 8 from 6 to 8 pm at The Plastic Club (247 South Camac Street). This brand-new series of art symposia sponsored by The Plastic Club and Off the Wall Gallery is open to the public, especially open-minded artists in the mood for lively discussions.
We hope to see you soon!
