Spring for the Skunk Cabbage
Spring skunk cabbage is one of the earliest-blooming plants, appearing in late winter or early spring in damp, swampy areas. It is known for its thermogenic properties, which allow it to generate heat to melt snow and attract pollinators with its pungent, “skunky” odor. The plant features a unique flower structure with a hooded, purplish-brown spathe and a central spadix, followed by large, cabbage-like leaves that emerge after flowering
