Happy Hour Somewhere

In 1984, National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry was documenting a refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan, when a teacher pointed him toward a young girl sitting at the back of a crowded classroom tent.
He had no interpreter. He didn’t know her name. Furthermore, he simply raised his camera and asked, without words, if he could photograph her.
She turned and looked directly into the lens – not with the shy glance of someone camera-shy, but with something raw and unflinching.
He pressed the shutter once. This is the image he made.
