Fall Foliage

May everyone enjoy the color show the good earth gives us. Old fall foliage at the beautiful Croft Farm Photo Shoot with the South Jersey Camera Club

Yesterday I went out for a photo shoot of the Fall Foliage with the South Jersey Photography Group to capture some fall color. It seems a little early. The location was at Croft Farm – Heritage Ct in Cherry Hill, NJ. The beautiful day brought out some leafers , but it was a good time to connect with some old photographers.

Still Here? Last Days of Fall for the Sunflowers

Fall for the Sunflowers

The project is continuing to run, I have no idea when it will end, which I do like certainly of the schedule.
The sunflowers will either naturally return to the earth or the farmer at Johnson Farm will turn them under with his tractor, either way they go back to earth to be part of another crop of sunflowers in another season. That, my friends, is how life works. Birth, life, death, and re-birth. I have posted some on +google plus site with the hashtag #deadflowersociety.

Wabi-Sabi Aesthetics: This Japanese philosophy embraces the transient, imperfect, and understated beauty of things that have been weathered by time or nature. Withered flowers, with their fading colors, delicate structures, and the quiet dignity of their decline, beautifully embody this aesthetic, conveying a sense of serenity and the bittersweet acknowledgment of impermanence.

Nature teaches us the lesson that “this too shall pass”, and all in this world is temporary. Life always leads to the ultimate paradox: Life and Death. Just as the sunflower dies, the cycle continues after the death of the blossom.

I hope we get some nice fall colors this year 2025. Please leave a comment if you love fall color.

Autumn leaves

Here are a few links on photographing leaves in the fall, which is upon us.

Get out, take some photos of leaves.

In the fall, leaves on deciduous trees change color and eventually fall off as part of the natural seasonal cycle. This process is primarily influenced by changes in daylight and temperature. Here’s a brief overview of what happens to leaves in the fall:

Color Change: As the days become shorter and the temperatures drop in the fall, trees receive signals to prepare for winter. Chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves responsible for photosynthesis, breaks down and disappears. This allows other pigments present in the leaves, such as carotenoids (which produce yellow and orange colors) and anthocyanins (which produce red and purple colors), to become more visible.

Vibrant Colors: The combination of these pigments can create the beautiful and vibrant autumn colors that many people associate with fall, such as red, orange, yellow, and purple.

Leaf Senescence: As the pigments change and the leaves stop producing food through photosynthesis, the leaves also become less efficient at retaining water and nutrients. This process is called senescence.

Leaf Falling: Eventually, weakened by the lack of nutrients and the changing conditions, the leaves detach from the tree. This process is called abscission. Before the leaves fall, they may be blown off by wind or fall due to their own weight.

Leaf Litter: The fallen leaves create a carpet of leaf litter on the ground, which provides essential organic matter and nutrients to the soil. This leaf litter decomposes over time, enriching the soil and supporting the growth of new plants.

The timing and intensity of fall foliage can vary depending on factors like the type of tree, climate, and geographical location. Some regions are known for their particularly stunning displays of fall foliage, attracting tourists from around the world to witness the beauty of autumn leaves.

Overall, the process of leaves changing color and falling in the fall is a fascinating and visually striking aspect of the changing seasons.

Looking for a great location ? Please leave it in comments. Thank you.

Fall Leaves are Coming

This strange looking leaf caught my eye on a walk in the woods.
“I like the scientific spirit—the holding off, the being sure but not to sure, the willingness to surrender ideas when the evidence is against them: this is ultimately fine—it always keeps the way beyond open—always gives life, thought, affection, the whole man, a chance to try over again after a mistake—after a wrong guess.”

Leaves fall from trees to give life—and other autumnal lessons

All living things have innate mechanisms to prompt organized cell death, typically to protect the integrity of the living organism. Leaves fall from trees to allow the tree to preserve resources and bloom again.

Autumn Foliage of New Jersey

Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter, and I was in search of some pictures. I found this fall foliage image in Lebanon, New Jersey, which is supposed to be the most beautiful area of New Jersey, and I’ll let you decide if that’s true or not.
These were shot in the Ken Lockwood Gorge Wildlife management area.
