Fall Color

I started the day wanted to get outside in the fall weather. It was a beautiful day and the trees were calling near. I wanted color, and it’s hard to find in the Pine Lands, with all the Pines.

I had thoughts of being near water.

So that put Oswego Lake was on the radar and I had a long drive, but I keep seeing splotches of golden yellows and reds. I enjoyed the peaceful lake and felt rejuvenated by the water’s strong presence.

I had to work through some camera issues, all-ways new stuff to learn and re-learn the old stuff.

May everyone enjoy the color show the good earth gives us. Old fall foliage at the beautiful Croft Farm Photo Shoot with the South Jersey Camera Club

Yesterday I went out for a photo shoot of the Fall Foliage with the South Jersey Photography Group to capture some fall color. It seems a little early. The location was at Croft Farm – Heritage Ct in Cherry Hill, NJ. The beautiful day brought out some leafers , but it was a good time to connect with some old photographers.

Uncommon to rare and local in varied habitats, from forests to rocky canyons, usually in rather wild areas. Active mainly at night, but can be seen hunting.

The Eurasian eagle-owl is a species of eagle-owl that resides in much of Eurasia. It is also called the Uhu and it is occasionally abbreviated to just the eagle-owl in Europe

The folks at Land Trust got me interested in Save The Oak, and I support them and their activities. Angel Oak is a Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana)located in Angel Oak Park on Johns Island near Charleston, South Carolina. Yes, I love angel Oak tree and will visit her with my family for my 81 birthday.

In 2008, Samantha Siegel took a stand and started a movement to save the Angel Oak and its surrounding land from impending development. Along the way, she garnered support from many notable conservation organizations, including the Coastal Conservation League and the South Carolina Environmental Law Project. Thanks to those efforts, we’re now working with the community to turn that land into the Angel Oak Preserve—a publicly accessible park with walking trails and historical, cultural, and environmental information. As we begin the early stages of the planning process, it was only right to bring Samantha back as Project Manager to finish the work she started.

We caught up with Samantha in the midst of her organizing efforts to revisit the history of this movement and discuss what the Angel Oak Effect means to her.

Q: It’s hard to imagine that as recently as 12 years ago, the Angel Oak was at risk of being surrounded by a massive development. What inspired you to take on the task of fighting for this iconic tree?

A: I had come to spend an hour of almost every day of my life at the Angel Oak. At that time, there weren’t many other people at the tree daily. So, it became my happy place. I sat there and studied, read, and just thought about things. The tree became my best friend, and when you think about it, that isn’t so strange. The mammoth oak demanded nothing and gave me everything I needed.

SC, is the fourth-largest island on the east coast of the USA. It is separated from the mainland and neighboring islands by the Stono and Kiawah rivers. The 84 square mile island is home to a host of different wildlife species on land, in the water and in the air. Johns Island has a thriving tourism industry, which operates in a relaxed and collaborative atmosphere. Being so close to the sea and rivers, seafood is plentiful and is reflected in the menus of most restaurants. Angel Oak is a live oak. It is native to the low country and is not very tall but has a widespread canopy. Lumber from the live oak forests in the sea islands was highly valued for shipbuilding in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Angel Oak stands on part of Abraham Waight’s 1717 land grant. Mr. Waight owned several plantations. The City of Charleston now owns Angel Oak. There is no charge to view the tree and is a must-see when visiting Charleston, South Carolina

For tourists who haven’t visited Angel Oak, you should know that it is this state’s most imposing work of nature, more impressive even than a plate of shrimp and grits. The Tree (one instinctively capitalizes the word when talking about this colossal vegetable) stands in an obscure wooded area of John’s Island, some 12 miles beyond the Ashley River. The Tree is huge, and it is ancient. Estimates of its age run as high as 1,500 years.

Towering over 65 feet high, the Angel Oak has shaded John’s Island, South Carolina, for over 1400 years, and would have sprouted 1000 years before Columbus’ arrival in the New World. Recorded history traces the ownership of the live oak and surrounding land, back to the year 1717 when Abraham Waight received it as part of a small land grant. The tree stayed in the Waight family for four generations, and was part of a Marriage Settlement to Justus Angel and Martha Waight Tucker Angel. In modern times, the Angel Oak has become the focal point of a public park. Today the live oak has a diameter of spread reaching 160 feet, a circumference of nearly 25 feet, and covers 17,100 square feet of ground. national-champion-tree-program

The Angel Oak is thought to be one of the oldest living things east of the Mississippi River. Acorns from the Angel Oak have grown to produce authentic direct-offspring trees.. Live oaks generally grow out and not up, but the Angel Oak has had plenty of time to do both, standing 65 ft high and with a canopy providing 17,000 square feet of shade. Its limbs, the size of tree trunks themselves, are so large and heavy that some of them rest on the ground (some even drop underground for a few feet and then come back up), a feature common to only the very oldest live oaks. It has survived countless hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and human interference, so there’s a good chance it will still be there waiting for you.

Dandelion Flowers and Facts: A Cheerful Sign of Spring

The dandelion flower is symbolic and has spiritual meaning too. Dandelion is the symbol of emotional healing. Since they can endure almost any living condition, they represent overcoming every hardship by standing strong and proud. Heat and power of the sun – Dandelion is a symbol of the sun always encouraging you and giving you strength.

Dandelions have the scientific name Taraxacum officinale. They belong to the family Asteraceae, which is also known as the aster or daisy family. The family’s earlier name of Compositae is sometimes used today. The latter name refers to the composite nature of the flowers, which are technically inflorescences consisting of multiple florets instead of a single flower. The center florets of many species in the Asteraceae or Compositae family are disk ones and the surrounding florets are ray ones, as in a daisy flower.

A dandelion “flower” (or inflorescence) is a bit different from a daisy one. All the dandelion’s florets are ray ones. The flowers close in the evening and open in the morning. The flower stems are sometimes red, as can be seen in the photo above.

I like to photograph plants and flowers. My photograph of a simple Dandelion clock which I show the secret of creation by illustration the star seed theory of the earths’ creation. I processed the image using Fractalius and called the image “Dandelion Unity”

Children LOVE them!

We don’t like them in our gardens… AND YET: The dandelion plant is a beneficial weed, with a wide range of uses, and is even a good companion plant for gardening.

Its taproot will bring up nutrients for shallower-rooting plants, and add minerals and nitrogen to soil.

It is also known to attract pollinating insects and release ethylene gas which helps fruit to ripen.

Taraxacum seeds are an important food source for certain birds.

Taraxacum, the common name is dandelion (from French dent-de-lion, meaning “lion’s tooth”), after flowering is finished, the dandelion flower head dries out for a day or two.

The dried petals and stamens drop off, the bracts reflex (curve backwards), and the parachute ball opens into a full sphere. Finally, the seed-bearing parachutes expand and lift out of it.

The parachute drops off the achene when it strikes an obstacle.

After the seed is released, the parachutes lose their feathered structure and take on a fuzzy, cotton-like appearance, often called “dandelion snow”. Another thing I love about being a photographer, you start looking at things in a ‘different’ way?
So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.

The sunflower is a flower that so many people love and adore. It is a flower that children love, and it is something that people look to symbolize summer.
No flower can lift someone’s spirits quite like sunflowers. They are bright and cheery, and as warm and inviting as the sweet summer sun. With brilliant yellow petals, also known as “rays,” sunflowers have an unmistakable sun-like appearance that has made them a crowd favorite, especially in the summer months.

Sunflowers come in a number of varieties—ranging from small to very large, from having yellow petals to red. However, there is more to sunflowers than meets the eye. While they are stunningly beautiful, they also are rich in history and meaning.
Sunflowers symbolize adoration, loyalty and longevity. Much of the meaning of sunflowers stems from its namesake, the sun itself. These flowers are unique in that they have the ability to provide energy in the form of nourishment and vibrancy—attributes which mirror the sun and the energy provided by its heat and light.

Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day.

The process of transformation and growth in nature? Sunflower buds indeed have a unique appearance when they first emerge. They often appear as small, tightly wrapped green structures with a rounded shape. As they mature, the bud undergoes a fascinating transformation, gradually unfurling and revealing the vibrant petals and beautiful sunflower head.

The growth of a sunflower bud into a full-grown flower is indeed a remarkable sight to behold. Witnessing the development from its initial form to the eventual bloom can be captivating and inspiring. It showcases the inherent beauty and complexity of nature’s design.

Nature constantly reminds us of its ability to create and transform, and sunflowers exemplify this phenomenon. From their peculiar-looking buds to the majestic and vibrant flowers they become, the process symbolizes growth, resilience, and the cycle of life. It’s truly a testament to the wonders of the natural world.

So yes, I do appreciate and find joy in the journey of sunflower buds as they transform into something magnificent. It’s a reminder of the inherent beauty and awe-inspiring nature of our world.

Foundation Distributes Sunflowers to Hundreds

On May 15, staff and volunteers from the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation distributed hundreds of sunflowers to students and faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Sunflowers have been known as an international symbol of a nuclear weapons-free world since 1996, when the Defense Ministers of the United States, Russia and Ukraine planted sunflowers in a field where Soviet missiles targeting the United States were once stationed.

The flowers were donated by a local flower farmer who wanted to spread the message of a nuclear weapons-free world in a creative way. To get involved in working for a nuclear weapons-free world, contact us at “Waging Peace/”.

The name Helianthus comes from the Greek words helios, meaning “sun” and anthos, meaning “flower.” They are known to turn their flower heads towards the sun throughout the day. As with other members of the aster family, sunflowers attract a host of pollinators in the late summer garden. In our Garden they are standing tall, blooming throughout September.
