Mount Moriah Cemetery, incorporated March 26, 1855 and established by an act of the Pennsylvania legislature, was operated under the auspices of the non-sectarian Mount Moriah Cemetery Association. The original cemetery occupied 54 acres in southwest Philadelphia, along Cobbs Creek. It boasted an ornate Romanesque entrance and gatehouse designed by noted Philadelphia architect Stephen Decatur Button (1813-1897).

On December 21, about 600 of Griffin’s troops overwhelmed a guard outpost of the 42nd located about one mile south of Blackhorse at Petticoat Bridge.[16][17] On the evening of December 22, Washington’s adjutant, Joseph Reed, went to Mount Holly and met with Griffin. Griffin had written to Reed, requesting small field pieces to assist in their actions, and Reed, who had been discussing a planned attack on Rall’s men in Trenton with Washington, wanted to see if Griffin’s company could participate in some sort of diversionary attack. Griffin was ill, and his men poorly equipped for significant action, but they apparently agreed to some sort of actions the next day.[18]
On the morning of December 23, von Donop brought about 3,000 troops (the 42nd British (Highland) Regiment and the Hessian Grenadier battalions Block and Linsing) to Petticoat Bridge where they overwhelmed Griffin’s men. Griffin’s troops retreated to Mount Holly where von Donop reported scattering about 1,000 men near the town’s meeting house. Jäger Captain Johann Ewald reported that “some 100 men” were posted on a hill “near the church”, who “retired quickly” after a few rounds of artillery were fired.[19] Griffin, whose troops had occupied Mount Holly, slowly retreated to their fortified position on the hill, following which the two sides engaged in ineffectual long-range fire.[20]

In December 1776, following victories on Long Island, New York City and White Plains, the British army went into winter quarters: mostly in New York, but with some 3,000 men quartered in New Brunswick and Princeton, a holding force of 1,500 Hessians at Trenton, a larger force of 2,000 Hessians and Scotsmen at nearby Bordentown, and smaller companies at Black Horse (Columbus) and Mansfield Square.
It was assumed that Washington’s forces in Pennsylvania – some 5,000 troops near Newtown, 1,500 at Bristol, and 1,000 manning the defenses of Philadelphia – were also in winter quarters.
But on the December 17, Colonel Samuel Griffin, on orders from General Washington through General Israel Putnam in Philadelphia, crossed the Delaware River with 600 men and marched via Moorestown to Mount Holly. His force, largely untrained men and boys from nearby towns augmented by two companies of Virginia riflemen and artillerists, encamped at Mount Holly and set up a few “3-pounder” artillery pieces on Iron Works Hill. Reports reached the Hessian commanders von Block and von Donop, at Black Horse and Bordentown respectively, that the American force at Mount Holly numbered 3,000 men.
By December 24, some 2,000 Hessians had been lured south to The Mount in Mount Holly, where they engaged in a day-long cannonade with rebel forces occupying Iron Works Hill on the far side of the town, south of Rancocas Creek. The Americans evacuate their positions that night and march to Moorestown. The Hessians hold their position, making merry over the confiscated contents of a local brewery.
On December 26, the dull thunder of guns echoed from the north. The Battle of Trenton was making history, bringing an overwhelming victory and the capture of 1,000 prisoners. Part of Washington’s success can be attributed to the action of the previous week that drew away many of the forces intended to support Trenton.

A wheel is a disc- or circle-shaped mechanical device. Its main purpose is to allow things to roll; in other words, the wheel spins, and objects on the wheels move more easily along the ground. It is a simple machine.
Most experts believe the ancient Mesopotamians invented the wheel about 8000 BC. In addition, the ASIA discovered it on their own around 3500 BC. The Inca and Maya had wheels on children’s toys around 1500 BC, but they did not use wheels for work. Africa south of the Sahara desert and Australia did not have the wheel until people there met people from other cultures.
